Proposed Seattle Late Fee Cap Passes City Council

On Tuesday, Seattle Ctty Council passed a cap of $10 on late fees for rent. The proposal by Councilmember Kshama Sawant had been amended in committee, to 1.5% or $50 flat fee, by Councilmember Sara Nelson, but was amended back to the original proposal during the full council meeting. Although Councilmember Lewis supported Nelson's reasonable amendment in committee, he bowed to pressure from Sawant and the Tenant's Union and reversed his stance on the vote to amend the proposal back to $10. Councilmembers Morales and Pedersen voted with Nelson against reversing the committee amendment. During the final bill Councilormembers Nelson and Pedersen were the only no votes.

An action alert will be sent to affected members once the ordinance is published.
