Spokane Tenant Protections Update

Posted By: Ryan Makinster Advocacy News,

On February 27, the Spokane city council passed two tenant protection ordinances, C36330 and C36366. C36330, which created a rental registration program that included a $15/door fee went into effect 30 days later. C36366,  included the creation of a Spokane specific “portable background/credit check program”, as well as several enforcement mechanisms and tenant supportive funds, including a legal assistance fund,  required the city to develop regulations, specific enforcement and enabling programs and to dedicate city funds. The city has been working on these issues and operational systems since the ordinance passed and intends to start compliance and enforcement in January 2024.

WMFHA is in communication with the administration to understand these requirements and programs and will be working with Spokane partners to develop a webinar to educate Spokane prior to implementation. If you are interested in participating in the development of this webinar or education effort, please contact Carter Nelson, Public Affairs Manager, at carter@wmfha.org.
