WMFHA Submits Comments to State Department of Housing Task Force

Posted By: William Schneider III Advocacy News, Articles,

The Washington Multi-Family Housing Association (WMFHA) recently submitted formal comments to the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Department of Housing Task Force, ensuring that the perspective of housing providers is represented as the state considers the structure and role of a potential new Department of Housing.

The Task Force was created to develop recommendations for how Washington can better coordinate housing policy, improve housing supply, and support housing stability statewide. As part of this process, stakeholders were invited to provide input through a public survey and written submissions.

On behalf of our members, WMFHA emphasized several key challenges impacting the ability to provide and maintain rental housing across Washington, including rising operating costs, increasing regulatory complexity, and ongoing issues with rent delinquency.

Our comments also outlined practical steps that would improve housing outcomes, including:

  • Clearer and more consistent statewide landlord-tenant policies

  • Improved regulatory guidance and education

  • A more balanced and functional eviction process

  • Greater policy predictability to support long-term investment

In addition, WMFHA highlighted the important role the state can play in supporting local jurisdictions through streamlined permitting, targeted grant funding, and incentives to meet housing production goals.

WMFHA will continue to engage with the Task Force and policymakers throughout this process to ensure that housing providers remain part of the conversation as recommendations are developed and considered.

We appreciate the opportunity to represent our members on this important issue and will keep you informed as this work moves forward.
